1992년 국가대표시범단원으로 첫 해외 파견을 나갔다. 그 해 중국과 수교가 처음 시작되어 태권도 파견은 더욱 의미가 있었다. 어떻게 시범을 했는지는 아무것도 기억나지 않지만 당시의 설렘과 긴장감은 지금도 생생하다.

매주 훈련을 위해 국기원을 오가며 시범에 대한 매력을 더 알게 되면서 각 기술 부분에 대해 관심을 갖기 시작하였다. 당시 시범 기술은 개개인 경험을 바탕으로 구전으로 전해내려 왔으며 기술 동작의 지도서는 찾아보기 힘들었다.
국가대표 단원으로 시작하여 주장과 코치를 거쳐 부감독을 맡으며 시범 격파 책이 꼭 있어야 한다고 느꼈다. 시범에 대한 여러 경험을 토대로 체계적인 격파 기술 책을 만들어야겠다는 숙제를 늘 가슴에 품고 준비한 과정이 벌써 10년이 넘은 듯하다. 늦었지만 이제라도 시범 책을 출판하게 되어 홀가분하면서도 시원섭섭하다.

이 책은 독자들이 좀 더 편하게 시범에 대하여 알 수 있도록 이론과 실기 방법을 사진과 함께 풀어놓았다. 어떻게 하면 보다 쉽게 동작을 할 수 있을지, 격파에 대한 위험은 어떻게 준비하고 대처해야 할지 등 시범격파 전반에 대한 궁금증을 해결할 수 있을 것이다.
시범에 관심을 두고 있는 분들께 조금이라도 도움이 되는 안내서가 될 수 있기를 바라는 마음으로 심혈을 쏟은 책이다.

일선 도장에서 시범을 가르치거나 배우고 싶은 지도자나 관원생, 격파를 전문적으로 배우고 싶어 하는 독자들에게 시범의 지침서가 될 수 있길 바란다. 격파의 체계적인 방법을 익히고 효율적인 훈련을 통해 시범의 화려함과 태권도의 본연의 멋을 살릴 수 있기를 소망한다.

용인대학교 태권도학과의 곽택용 교수는 겨루기, 품새, 시범의 대표성을 가진 태권도의 정통가다. 선수 시절 월드컵 세계대회, 세계군인선수권, 세계무예대회에서 우승했고, 올림픽, 아시안게임, 세계품새대회, Sea game, 세계대학선수권대회, 유니버시아드대회에 감독 · 코치를 역임하며 지도자로서의 역량도 입증했다. 겨루기 선수 출신으로는 드물게 국기원과 대한태권도협회에서 시범단 단원과 지도자로 활약한 태권도인으로 히스토리채널 인간병기 태권도 편에서 전 프로미식축구선수 빌더프를 뒤 후리기 한 방으로 KO시킨 것으로 잘 알려져 있다. 현재 대한태권도협회 국가대표시범단 부감독을 맡고 있으며 세계 각 대륙에 태권도 시범 전파하고 있다. 2008년 “신화”라는 공연에 주연배우로 참여하여 태권도 시범의 공연화를 하기 위한 첫걸음을 시도하였으며 “탈” 공연으로 유럽에서 성공리 공연을 펼쳤다. 태권도 시범의 공연예술로서 탈바꿈 시도는 계속되고 있다.
